<image:title>Latest - Tawny Frogmouths - Earlier this month on a walk in Centennial Park with some friends, we were lucky enough to see two Tawny Frogmouths - these remarkable birds are difficult to spot because they stay very still during the day using their expert camouflage to disguises themselves as tree branches.</image:title>
<image:caption>Tawny Frogmouths are nocturnal, carnivorous and their soft feathers allow for silent flight. They have these enchanting large amber eyes, but despite similarities, they are not owls. In fact, they are more closely related to nightjars. Frogmouths get their name from their large wide frog-like bill, and they hunt insect, slugs and snails, as well as some small mammals, reptiles and birds. The whiskers on their bill may help detect movement of flying insects. They mate for life and a mating pair often stay in the same territory for more than 10 years. Both parents raise the young and they can often been seen perched in pairs or the whole family (once the chicks have hatched) on the one branch. Learn more about these remarkable birds here.</image:caption>

<image:title>Latest - Citizen Science in Waverley - What is Citizen Science? Quite simply its when the general public collects or analyses data about the Natural World. For birds this could be logging the bird species you see on your daily walk through apps like Birdata, eBird or iNaturalist.</image:title>
<image:caption>Why is it important? When many people in lots of different places record what species they see in day-to-day life, collectively we can collect way more data over much longer time scales than scientists would ever have the capacity to. This data all together can help conservation scientists and ecologists better understand populations and how they are changing over time - it would be the first red flag that a species is struggling, or tell us where and when species are migrating. Every record counts! For the citizen scientists out there in Waverley, Council has set up an iNaturalist project, where they’d love you to record birds and other wildlife you see around the area to help Council learn about the biodiversity in our beautiful backyard. I was lucky enough to see 2 Peregrin Falcons in North Bondi last week, and a Whimbrel (photo) in the diggers golf course. What birds or other wildlife have you spotted in the local area recently?</image:caption>

<image:caption>The simple act of getting out, observing nature and recording what you see can contribute to conservation. Which is why I’ve put together a guided bird to help you become a Citizen Scientist! By learning to accurately record the birds you see, you'll contribute valuable data that helps scientists better understand bird populations and aids in conservation efforts. Plus, it's a lot of fun and a great way to improve your birding skills! Join me for a morning walk along the cliffs, where we'll enjoy birdwatching and discover how to make your birding count. <image:caption>Although I'm a birder, I'm also a nature lover, and winter in the Eastern Suburbs brings the added joy of spotting the migrating humpback whales. That's why our June walk will take a special route along our stunning coast. The coastal bush offers a unique chance to see a diverse range of wildlife - from tiny bush birds to ocean birds to giant whales - all in one walk, right here locally. In fact, the birds can even help us spot the whales. Binoculars are provided so you can get an up-close look at this amazing wildlife. Limited spots available - booking link below. <image:title>Latest - Binoculars for Birding - 8x Magnification gives a good amount of detail for when looking at birds, but is steady enough for hand held use.</image:title>
<image:caption>42 mm or 32 mm objective lens diameter. They are both full sized but not too cumbersone. 42 mm gives a slightly bigger field of view, so will be a little easier to find what you are looking for and avoid those black rings that can be frustrating for begginers, while 32 mm will be a little bit lighter to carry. However, if 32 mm is still too bulky for you, there are pocket sized travel binoculars, just be mindful they may take a bit more patience and practice to get to grips with.</image:caption>
